11:22 am - Spore Gameplay Video
Ok, so I just learned of a game being developed called Spore. It looks to be the coolest game design I have ever seen. Its from the makers of The Sims and it involves controlling a creature beginning from the microscopic level through its evolution, all the way to intergalactic conquest. You have to watch the video below just to get an idea of how massive this game will be, and just how cool. Also attached the official site:

6:08 pm - Operation - Circle Jerks
I went to see a rabbi
but despite his advise
I want an operation
I will not father life
operation, operation
snip & tie, snip & tie
they send me to a preacher
a really toughtful guy
he said my idea's crazy
I shouldn't even try
this operation, operation
snip & tie, snip & tie
but i've just seen a surgeon
and with a knife he cut
I cannot bring you children
this world is such a rut
operation, operation
snip & tie, snip & tie
I had an operation
a statement of our times
they tied my balls together
what's insides not alive

current mood: sore

9:20 am - Turning Point
Recently, a lot of doubts have been finding there way out of my subconscious and into my conscious mind. As some of you may or may not know, I have been in school the last few years trying to get a degree. When I first got back into school the natural path for me to take was Information Technology, or something similar dealing with computers. See, for the last 8 years I have been supporting about 450 workstations at a call center here in Jacksonville, and over the years that job has expanded to database design and application training for most MS products. So basically, I am that Saturday Night Live skit, "Nick, your company computer guy." So when I got back into school a few years ago, it was the natural choice to do IT....that is until my first semester was over where I got an A in an intro Zoology class that I had taken.

That changed everything and I decided at that point to follow a younger Mark's dream to become an animal scientist. I wanted to be the guy who goes to foreign places and studies exotic creatures. I wanted to discover deep sea monsters like giant squid and glow in the dark crab. So I changed my path and started taking all the classes I would need to get a bachelors degree in Biology.

Unfortunately, the dreams of my youth have recently begun to fade under the reality of my life. I have started to let myself really see where the path I am taking will probably lead me. I am 31 years old. I make a nice paycheck at State Farm and I owe quite a bit of money on Student Loans already. For me to even think about earning a decent wage in the Biology/Zoology field, I will HAVE to get a PhD. Its just that simple. Without a PHD you can forget about the best paying jobs. Hell, we have even had professors tell us the success rate of a biology degree leans more towards teaching then it does to the glamorous jobs. Also to get the PHD, I have to leave Jacksonville and find a school in the country somewhere where they have a decent Zoology graduate program. You certainly cannot get one here in Jacksonville. And that means leaving State Farm, my paycheck, my security, for an uncertain future. Add to that the fact that this summer I have had a chance to get a taste of what research in the field will be like as I have been assisting a professor with a study of turtles on a beach here in Jacksonville and you know what? I havent enjoyed it very much. Its just hot and dirty and well......

And here dear readers is where the doubts begin to break through to my analytical mind. How can I provide for my family if I take this path? How can I ensure my lovely wife wants for nothing if I pull us up by the roots and take us to god knows where, to hope I can find a job that will work around a graduate program school schedule to get a degree that I cannot even guarantee will lend itself to comfortable living in the end? How can I make that kind of a risky choice when I am 31 years old already?

Right now, I dont think I can anymore. Its too risky, too doubtful of the outcome. At this point, the only thing I can count on is that a degree in the IT field can do nothing but better the situation that we are in right now. Plus, State Farm will begin to pay for the classes again so I wouldnt even have to worry about any more student loans. And its not like I am not a computer geek anyways. So....I may be changing majors...

To be honest, I have never felt more lost then I do at this moment.

Ok, so due to getting a sick bonus from work this year I plan to embark on a trip to finally get my first ink. My wife is in the process of designing me a Polynesian style cuttlefish to go on my left arm/shoulder.

My question to yall is, where in your opinion, is the best tattoo artist in town. And please, go ahead and repeat what someone else has already said. Im looking for majority opinion here. Thanks ahead of time.

8:43 pm - Important Notice
19 different brands of Diamond, Country Value and Professional dog foods have been recalled due to a toxic chemical that got into the food and is killing the dogs. Most of the people that buy this would be kennel owners but just in case you know someone who buys this brand, pass this on since the recal may not be know well enough.

8:30 pm - Old Expressions
You ever have an expression or word that you used to use alot but at some point in your life stopped using. Then one day it pops out of your mouth as naturally as if you had never stopped using it to begin with. Of course at that moment your brain goes "why did I say that?" for a second or two until your memory kicks in and you go "OH YEAH! I remember that!"

Well that happened to me today. This is something my brothers will remember I am sure. Today I used the word "deathpig" in a sentance just out of the blue. Matt, Pat, remember that one?

For those of you going "wtf is deathpig" I will explain. Deathpig was a word we used to use all the time to describe anything large, huge, overblown, outrageous....

So for example, when talking about, say a really big omlette, one might go, "holy hell that was a deathpig omlette."

There ya go folks, deathpig....feel free to use it.

Just thought I would share a few things today...

First, some of you may have seen this on Shary's journal, but then some of you may have not. This is a badass song/video done by a band called the Greenskeepers. Its inspired by Silence of the Lambs. Check it out here:

And this is an artist in England who does pavement drawings that kick much ass. An example and the link to his site follows:

10:59 pm - Serenity
So, speaking of Dragoncon, one of the big themes at the con this year is the "Browncoat" theme. The Browncoats are what people who claim to be fans of the show Firefly call themselves. They call themselves this due to the fact that main character is an ex military officer of an army that was nicknamed the Browncoats, due to the fact that thier uniforms were brown. That said, one of the big themes this year is the Browncoats. This is probably due to the upcoming movie Serenity, a spin off film of the show. Most of the cast of Firefly is going to be at Dragoncon and there are gonna be several panels on it, several parties dedicated to it and I am sure lots of costumes from the show.

So when Firefly ran on Fox during its one and only season, I was working those nights and I never got to see the show. I decided since it is going to be one of the themes this year, I may as well get the box set from my in-laws and see what the show was like. So that is what we did. We sat here today and watched pretty much all 14 episodes (except for the 3 we watched earlier this week)

I have to say, when I went to watch the show, I never expected to fall that much in love with a new television show. I also never expected to be this disgusted with network television for not running a show as good as Firefly instead of the reality bullshit they run these days. Firefly was an intense, funny, creative and all around REALLY good series and I am really sad that it didnt get more then one season.

If you have never seen Firefly, I am doing you a favor by telling you to borrow the box set from someone, or even buy it, its worth it. I promise you havent seen a show this good in a long time. Right now I am hoping the movie does well enough to convince someone, even a cable network, of maybe picking it up again.

Take my love. Take my land.
Take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free.
You can't take the sky from me.

Take me out to the black.
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back.
Burn the land And boil the sea.
You can't take the sky from me.

Have no place I can be since I found Serenity.
But you can't take the sky from me.

9:51 am - Dragoncon and things...
So..our first forray into the world of home ownership was an utter disaster. After spending over 700 dollars for an inspection and an appraisal on the house we were going to buy, it turned out the house appraised at 2000 dollars less we had hoped. This in turn meant that because the seller was agreeing to pay half of our closing costs, he would then not only have to pay 3000+ dollars of our closing, but now he was getting 2000 less for his house overall. Either way, the contract fell apart and here we were having ate the 700 dollars and no house to show for it. And then on top of all that, our current landlord, who happens to be a real estate lawyer, and a very nice lady, informed us that the 8000 dollar total pricetag for total closing costs that the mortgage company was quoting us was way too high. And several other people we have talked to seem to agree. So chances are, even if we had closed, we may have been paying way too much. Bleh...

So the new plan is to stay here in this dumpy little house for another month, and find a new and nicer rental house. We were shown the perfect house in Hidden Hills the other day, but apparently our streak of really bad luck had not yet run its full course so as it turns out they had taken a deposit on our dream home from someone else just the day before....oh well, we will return to the search next month as soon as we get back from Dragoncon...

Speaking of Dragoncon, is anyone else going this year, or thinking of going? We have a room reserved in one of the con hotels for the week and are looking forward to a week away and lots of geekery!!!
